Greetings Fellow Runners –

It’s an exciting time of year for distance runners. We’re at the cusp of many spring marathons and half marathons, with some already run. It’s so exciting, that I can’t wait to get to the meat of the newsletter.

Last week’s and this week’s run – There’s not much to say about last week’s cutback or taper run in nice conditions, so I won’t say much. Some people are running as long as 22 miles this weekend, with others running less as indicated below:

Illinois / Big Sur – 9.8 mile Southern Trail (taper, may optionally head straight back up bike path for 9 total)

Flying Pig / Wisconsin – 22.2 miles: 9.8 mile Southern Trail plus 8 mile Lake Bluff Loop plus 4.4 mile College Loop

Congratulations and good luck – Congrats to Lexie Markarian who ran a near PR of 4:05:37 at the Veronia Marathon in Oregon last weekend. Good luck to current NSDRC members Ajay Koul, Brad Muender, Chris Muender, Joan Rush, Julie Pfeffer, Kim Monk, Paige Douglas, and Volker Fischer on Monday as they run the Boston Marathon. Join us before this Saturday’s run to wish runners who will be competing in the Big Sur and Illinois Marathons good luck.

Hydration – Thanks to Eli Carmeli for last week. This week, Mary Cole and Robyn Wenger will handle hydration. As we approach the end of the winter season, we ask that anyone in possession of a tank or Gatorade concentrate please return it to me or Joan Rush in the next few weeks. We need to collect supplies in preparation for our summer training.

Summer Training Group Leaders - Although we’re still in our winter / spring season, we’re beginning to plan for the summer / fall session. If anyone is interested in being a Group Leader this summer, please let me know. The benefits include free entry to the Ready to Run 20 and the CARA Compound before the marathon, along with a group leader shirt and some other swag at the end of the year. The responsibilities include attending the majority of the runs, maintaining the proper pace, and insuring the safety of the group. We’re in need of Group Leaders for 8:00, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30. and 12:00 minutes per mile paces. If you’re interested, or want to suggest someone, please let me know.

Training tip – More tips on that tricky taper period that many of our runners are encountering now:

Another great workout at Vision Quest tonight means another week with a shorter newsletter. This weekend includes religious holidays for some of our members. I wish everyone who observes a meaningful Good Friday and Easter, as well as Chag Same’ach Pesach.
